LU’s run at NZ cricket comes to an end

LUCKNOW: Finally, it’s the end of the road for Lucknow University in the North Zone Inter University Cricket Tournament as they lost to HNB University Garhwal by five wickets in Rohtak on Sunday in a pre-quarterfin­al match.

LU could make 128/8 in 20 overs while batting first after winning the toss. Sundar Yadav (36) and Anand Srivastava (29) were the main run getters. For winners, Aman (4/30) and Ashish (2/28) bowled well. In reply, HNB University romped home in 18.5 overs, losing five wickets. Rahul Gupta and Anand Srivastava shared four wickets between them.

Hosts and defending champions Lucknow scored 9-0 win against Kanpur to kick-off their campaign in the 11th Jaman Lal Sharma Memorial State Hockey Tournament, at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ stadium here on Sunday.

Krishna Mohan and Alok Mishra remained the star performers for the winners, netting three goals each, whereas Sharukh Ali and Siddhant Rawat scored two and one goal respective­ly.

In other matches of the day, Vivek Academy (Varanasi) beat Pilibhit 11-0 after leading by 6-0 at the half time, Etawah beat Rampur 4-0, Gorakhpur beat Rampur 5-0, Agra beat Karampur 5-4, Allahabad beat Athgaon 3-2, Ghazipur beat Kanpur Stadium 6-0, Muzzafarna­gar beat Saharanpur 2-1 and Puranpur beat Kaushambi 4-1.

OPEN CHESS

For yet another time, Pawan Batham emerged victorious in the open category of the Avijai Chess Tournament here on Sunday. He earned 4.5 points out of five rounds. Anchal Kumar Rastogi and Aman Agarwal with 3.5 points each finished second and third, respective­ly. In amateur category Ridam Nigam finished top.
