MEERUT: Unidentified criminals shot at BSP’s newly elected chairman of Anoopshahar Nagar Palika in district Bulandahahr on Monday night.

Brijesh Kumar alias Gopal Sharma had gone to feed fishes in the Ganges when unidentified criminals fired at him and escaped.

Sharma sustained three bullet injuries and doctors have referred him to Meerut for treatment.

SSP Bulandshahar said police were working on every possible angle and attackers would be arrested soon.

Sources, however, said election rivalry could also be the reason behind the attack.

Meanwhile, angry supporters of Sharma and BSP workers protested against the incident and blamed police for being negligent towards the security of elected representatives of the BSP.

BSP former MLA from Anoopshahar Gajendra Singh also visited the district hospital to meet Sharma.

MEERUT: A Samajwadi Party leader and former corporator from Rasheed Nagar in Meerut was allegedly poisoned on Saturday night when he had gone to meet the voters after the victory of his wife in civic body elections, police said.

Superintendent of police (city) Maan Singh Chauhan said former corporator Haji Shahid Abbasi was admitted to the hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.

Abbasi has been a three-time corporator from Rasheed Nagar. The party fielded his wife Nazreen after the seat was reserved for women candidates this time.

“After Nazreen won the election, Abbasi and his supporters visited the area to thank the voters where someone allegedly offered him sweets laced with poisonous substance. He was admitted to the hospital when he started vomiting blood,” Abbasi’s brother Abid told the police.

The SP (city) said Abid lodged a report at Lisari Gate police station.

Earlier, Abbasi was in the limelight for protesting against reciting of ‘Vande Matram’ during the meetings of nagar nigam house.

He often used to have confrontation with BJP corporators and leaders over the issue. He had even allegedly slapped a BJP corporator Tahseem over the issue which led to a hue and cry.
