Crime graph in state has come down: DGP

-

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh director general of police Sulkhan Singh on Monday claimed that the crime graph in the state had come down considerably.

He said while incidents of dacoity had become nil, there was a sharp decline in murder and rape cases, also compared to the figures reported in the last two years.

“The assessment of crime should not be done on the basis of population, but on crime rate,” he said, talking to reporters. Singh refuted the data recently released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) putting UP on the top spot on the crime graph for 2016. Another report by NCRB said Lucknow recorded the highest number of cases of crime/atrocities against scheduled castes (16.2 per cent or 262 cases) followed by Patna (14.9 per cent with 241 cases). But Singh brushed aside the data .

“UP is not number one. We figure on the 26th place,” he said, dishing out his own crime statistics. The crime rate in the state was 12.7 compared to the national average of 233.6, he said adding that UP also fared better with a 59 per cent conviction rate against the national average of 46.7. “Against the sanctioned strength of 178 policemen for a population of one lakh, we have only 77 police personnel,” the top cop said, adding that the law and order situation had improved despite the shortfall. On non-registration of FIR by the police, the DGP said UP police had recently started its twitter service, which was receiving a good response and all complaints received on it were being taken up promptly.
