ExBHU VC Lalji Singh dies

VARANASI: Former vice chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, Prof Lalji Singh died of cardiac arrest on Sunday. Singh, 70, was honoured with Padma Shri for research on DNA finger printing.

VARANASI: Father of DNA fingerprin­ting and former BHU vice chancellor prof Lalji Singh died of a massive heart attack at Sir Sundar Lal (SSL) Hospital of the central university on Sunday night. He was 70. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

A recipient of Padma Shri, Singh reached Lal Bahadur Shastri internatio­nal airport, Varanasi, to board a flight for Hyderabad on Sunday evening.

It was at the airport that he complained of chest pain. People accompanyi­ng him rushed him to SSL hospital where he breathed his last.

BHU spokespers­on Dr Rajesh Singh said a team of cardiologi­sts led by Dr Dharmendra Singh attended to Singh and tried to give him best possible treatment. However, the attack was so severe that he could not be saved, he added. The end came at around 9.55 pm.

Singh, a native of Jaunpur, served as the vice chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) for three years between 2011 and 2014.

He was conferred the Padma Shri for his special research on DNA fingerprin­ting.

He was a scientist at the centre for cellular and molecular biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, where he set up Genome Foundation. He was at his native place in Jaunpur for the last four days.
