LUCKNOW : Replacing heart valve would now be possible without making big incisions, said Dr Sanjay Tandon, secretary of Association of Physicians of India.

Talking to the media on the side lines of a workshop on cardiology here on Sunday, Dr Tandon said that replacing aortic and mitral valve was now possible without major incisions. “This is done with the help of blood vessels and is a major relief to patients who do not wish to go for open surgery,” he said.

Experts in the workshop shared the advances in the field of cardiology. Dr Praveen Chandra, Dr Atul Mehrotra and other specialists shared their views, giving details of advances in treatment.

Doctors said that cases of heart attack were increasing, with even young patients being reported. Now, even those in the age group of 20 to 30 years were falling prey to heart problems, whereas the average age for heart problem was over 40 years till recent years. They said cases of diabetes and blood pressure had also increased, hence taking care of oneself was important.

“Taking care of one’s health does not require much but a little conscious effort about diet and some exercise every day,” said Dr

Tandon. “If you feel breathless while walking or climbing stairs even without any significant illness, you should consult your doctor and take adequate steps to maintain good health,” he said, adding, “Precaution and early diagnosis can prevent major illness, particularly in case of the heart.”

Doctors said that even if the cost of prevention was compared to that of disease and its treatment, then prevention would be cheaper. “You spend only on your body when you go for preventive measures but when you fall sick you spend on medical bills and travel. Also your working days are spent in treatment, thereby reducing your stock of leave,” said Dr Tandon.
