DEHRADUN: The Doon police will soon file a charge sheet in connection with the interstate kidney racket that was busted at a hospital on the outskirts of the Uttarakhand capital three months ago.

A total of 14 accused, including alleged mastermind Dr Amit Kumar Raut, have been arrested in the organ ring case that was unearthed at Gangotri Charitable Hospital, around 30 km from Dehradun, on September 11.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the police that probed the racket has prepared the charge sheet. “We will file the charge sheet in the kidney racket case in the court very soon. We have gathered evidence against the accused and are hopeful of building a strong case against the accused (in the court),” Dehradun superintendent of police (rural) Sarita Dobhal, who is leading the SIT, told HT.

Once the charge sheet is submitted, the court decides if the accused can be put on trial based on the evidence against him or her. Besides forensic and documentary evidence, the police are also counting on the statements of four persons who were brought to Dehradun from other states on the promise of being given Rs 3 lakh per kidney by the touts working for the racket.

“They had later turned approvers, whose statements will help us in nailing the accused,” Dobhal said, referring to three persons from West Bengal and one from Gujarat who were apprehended by the Haridwar police while on their way from the hospital to Delhi.

The police arrested a doctor couple who allegedly travelled from Nepal to Uttarakhand for assisting in the illegal kidney surgeries.
