NSUI-RLD nominee wins Meerut univ students’ poll

MEERUT : The joint candidate of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) was elected president of the Chaudhary Charan Singh University students’ union in Meerut on Friday. The NSUI is the students’ wing of the Congress.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the students’ wing of the RSS-BJP, finished in third position for this post. The election was held on Friday.

The ABVP, however, retained the post of vice-president and won the general secretary’s post.

For top post, NSUI-RLD joint candidate Vijay Singh Rana defeated his nearest rival Anand Prakash Siddharth of the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (the Samajwadi Party student wing) by just six votes. Rana polled 727 votes and Siddharth got 721. Rohit Kumar of the ABVP secured 711 votes.

Former student leader Pradeep Arora, organising secretary in the state congress committee, said the NSUI’s victory indicated “the winds have begun blowing against BJP”.

Hans Chaudhary of the ABVP defeated Sangeeta Gautam of the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha for the vice-president’s post. The ABVP’s Prashant Patel was elected general secretary, defeating Vikas Yadav of the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha.

Akreem Anees and Vaibhav Pandey of the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha retained the posts of joint secretary and treasurer, respective­ly, defeating their ABVP rivals.
