Father of Ajinkya Rahane booked after car runs over woman

PUNE: Cricketer Ajinkya Rahane’s father Madhukar Baburao Rahane, 54, was booked for causing the death of a senior citizen in an accident in Kagal taluk of Kolhapur district, around 250 kilometers from Pune.

The deceased was identified as Ashatai Dadasaheb Kamble, 67, a resident of Savitri Nagar, Kagal police officials said.

According to Audumbar Patil, police inspector attached with Kagal police station, Kamble was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Kolhapur where she succumbed to injuries on Thursday evening.

Madhukar Rahane was driving from Mumbai to Konkan with his family and hit the woman at Kagal around noon.

According to the complaint filed with police, the woman was in Kagal to attend an engagement function and was crossing the road when the incident happened, Patil said.

Madhukar has been booked on charges of causing hurt by act endangerin­g life or personal safety of others, causing grievous hurt by act endangerin­g life or personal safety of others and causing death by negligence, news agency PTI quoted a senior police inspector as saying.

“We have sent him (Madhukar Rahane) a notice and asked him to come to the station.He is cooperatin­g in the investigat­ion,” Patil said.

According to police, Madhukar was not speeding at the time of incident. “There was no safe provision for her to cross the road. There is a tunnel which is far away from the bus stop. It is difficult for people to walk all the way. ( Madhukar) Rahane was not speeding either,” Patil said.
