Alex, Mahitha win AITA crowns in style

LUCKNOW: Qualifier Alex Solanki and Mahitha Dadi Reddy won the men’s and women’s singles crowns, respective­ly at the AITA Tennis Tournament, notching up straight sets wins, at the SDS Tennis Academy here on Friday.

Delhi’s Alex, who has played in junior Davis Cup, proved his class by beating Rajasthan’s Arpit Sharma 6-4, 6-2 in a match where the only difficulty, he faced when holding serve at 4-4 in a game which went to four deuces. For his effort Solanki earned Rs 7,800, whereas Arpit had to satisfy with Rs 5,400.

Alex went on completing his golden double on the final day. Teaming with Men’s doubles finals Arnev Alok Goel, he defeated the duo of Tushar Madan and Yash Chaurasia 6-1, 6-2 in the men’s doubles final.

Andhra Pradesh’s Mahitha was not only the tallest player but lived up to her stature by totally out classing the top seed Kaaviya Balasubram­aniam 6-0, 6-2. Mahitha with her long reach and accuracy totally blunted the power game of Kaaviya, who made 27 unforced errors. Mahitha picked up 12 ranking points from this win.
