LUCKNOW:The state government will implement a phased ban on all diesel vehicles that are over 10 years old in order to check pollution, chief minister Yogi Adityanath announced in the state assembly on Wednesday.

He also said state government had tied up with the union ministry of petroleum and natural gas to purchase the crop stubble which will be converted into biofuel.

The state government will set up straw purchase centres to benefit farmers and check pollution, he said.

This step was being taken to prevent a Delhi-like situation where smog covered the national capital recently after the burning of post-harvest paddy stubble by farmers in Punjab and Haryana.

The state government was also working on solid waste management to stop people from burning garbage, he said.

The government will also introduce a scheme for the people’s participation in a pollution control programme. Crackdown had already been ordered on mining and forest mafia, the chief minister said.

THE GOVERNMENT WILL ALSO INTRODUCE A SCHEME FOR THE PEOPLE’S PARTICIPATION IN A POLLUTION CONTROL PROGRAMME

The chief minister spoke on the issue after Samajwadi Party (SP) members Sanjay Garg and Nitin Agarwal on Wednesday expressed concern over the increasing pollution level during zero hour. Adityanath said after a meeting with the Pollution Control Board, the state government had issued guidelines to the district administrations to check pollution.

“A state level meeting was held under my chairmanship to discuss the pollution issue and prepare a plan to check the hazard. It was decided that trucks transporting sand and stone dust will have to cover the sand during transportation. Ban on old diesel vehicles, sprinkling of water on roads and trees (were also decided upon),” he said.
