Training programme on wildlife journalism begins at LU
LUCKNOW: A three-day national training programme on wildlife journalism began in Lucknow University on Thursday where participants were told about the importance of effective dissemination of information on environmental issues.
The training is being organised by Institute for Wildlife Sciences- Centre for Advanced Studies, in collaboration with Institute of Mass communication in Science and technology, Biodiversity and Wildlife Conservation Lab, Department of Zoology, University of Lucknow.
“Wildlife journalism is a vital mode for communicating important environmental issues and making the natural world more accessible to the public,”said Amita Kanaujia, professor in Zoology department, Lucknow University.
“Just like a perfectly captured wildlife photograph, a beautifully crafted piece of nature writing can be thrilling to create or behold,” Prof Kanaujia said.
“Journalism refers to the production and distribution of reports on the interaction of events, facts, ideas and their compilation in the form of news and that ultimately impacts the society to at least some degree,” she added.
A lecture on ‘The vultures and their conservation’ was also given by Prof Kanaujia.
Participants from different parts of Uttar Pradesh and different Universities have registered themselves for this training and are actively participating.
Dr Somesh Gupta delivered a
lecture on, ‘Biodiversity laws, traditional knowledge and bio resource policies’.
Dr Shailendra Singh (Director, Turtle Survival Alliance, India) gave an insightful talk on ‘Aquatic biodiversity and wildlife trade’.
“It will prove to be very beneficial for students opting for wildlife sciences and journalism as their career. The aim is sharing knowledge about conservation, skill development and the placement of students,” Prof Kanaujia said.
