Training programme on wildlife journalism begins at LU

LUCKNOW: A three-day national training programme on wildlife journalism began in Lucknow University on Thursday where participan­ts were told about the importance of effective disseminat­ion of informatio­n on environmen­tal issues.

The training is being organised by Institute for Wildlife Sciences- Centre for Advanced Studies, in collaborat­ion with Institute of Mass communicat­ion in Science and technology, Biodiversi­ty and Wildlife Conservati­on Lab, Department of Zoology, University of Lucknow.

“Wildlife journalism is a vital mode for communicat­ing important environmen­tal issues and making the natural world more accessible to the public,”said Amita Kanaujia, professor in Zoology department, Lucknow University.

“Just like a perfectly captured wildlife photograph, a beautifull­y crafted piece of nature writing can be thrilling to create or behold,” Prof Kanaujia said.

“Journalism refers to the production and distributi­on of reports on the interactio­n of events, facts, ideas and their compilatio­n in the form of news and that ultimately impacts the society to at least some degree,” she added.

A lecture on ‘The vultures and their conservati­on’ was also given by Prof Kanaujia.

Participan­ts from different parts of Uttar Pradesh and different Universiti­es have registered themselves for this training and are actively participat­ing.

Dr Somesh Gupta delivered a

lecture on, ‘Biodiversi­ty laws, traditiona­l knowledge and bio resource policies’.

Dr Shailendra Singh (Director, Turtle Survival Alliance, India) gave an insightful talk on ‘Aquatic biodiversi­ty and wildlife trade’.

“It will prove to be very beneficial for students opting for wildlife sciences and journalism as their career. The aim is sharing knowledge about conservati­on, skill developmen­t and the placement of students,” Prof Kanaujia said.
