Mewani denied permission to meet jailed Bheem Sena leader
MEERUT: In an attempt to give dalit politics a new dimension, young dalit leader and MLA from Gujarat Jignesh Mewani went to Saharanpur jail on Wednesday to meet jailed leader of Bheem Army Chandrashekhar alias Raavan.
Mewani submitted his application to jail authorities but it was rejected on the ground that only family members and lawyer were permitted to meet Chandrashekhar on the designated day of the week. Mewani waited for half an hour and then returned without meeting the jailed leader.
Sources in the Bheem Army, however, claimed that a half-anhour meeting between the two leaders took place inside the jail.
A Bheem Army worker said only Mewani was allowed to go in and he met the jailed leader but the jail authorities denied the meeting. Mewani’s visit was kept very confidential and even Bheem Army men remained tight lipped on the issue, disclosing it only after Mewani left for Punjab to participate in a programme.
Earlier, during their ‘Yuva Hunkar Rally’ in Delhi, Mewani and other leaders had raised the issue of alleged excesses of the administration and police against the Bheem Army and its leader Chandrashekher and had demanded immediate release of the latter.
Mewani’s arrival in Saharanpur has infused fresh vigour in the activists of Bheem Army who have been clamouring for Chandrashekhar’s release for the past few months.
