One dead, three hurt in shelling on Sunday

ARNIA/RSPURA: A 45-year-old man died and three others including a BSF man were injured in heavy overnight shelling and firing by Pakistan on the Indian villages and forward posts along the Internatio­nal Border (IB) in RS Pura, Arnia, Kanachak and Ramgarh sub-sectors of Jammu district through Sunday night.

The overnight shelling continued till 8.30 am on Monday.

“Ram Dass Bawa and Gopal Dass Bawa, both sons of Bansi Dass Bawa of Kanachak were injured in Pak firing and were rushed to GMC Hospital in Jammu late on Sunday night. However, 45-year-old Gopal Dass Bawa was brought dead. His brother is recuperati­ng,” said a police official.

A woman, Kanta Devi wife of Rattan Dass, was also injured in Pakistan shelling in Kanachak.

Pakistan also opened intermitte­nt fire and shot some mortars in Ramgarh sub sector in Samba district adjoining Arnia sub sector, injuring a BSF jawan. The injured jawan has been identified as Arun Verma of 62 battalion of the BSF. He was posted at SP 2 post.

The fresh spate of shelling after a brief lull since Saturday afternoon began on Sunday evening around 8pm.

DEATH TOLL NOW 12

With one more death, the toll since Wednesday has now gone up to 12. The dead include two BSF men, three soldiers and seven civilians.

In the latest skirmishes the epicenter was Kanachak sector in Jammu district. Pakistan also shelled forward villages Shamka, Bega, Bera, Choga and Bidhipur Jattan in RS Pura sector and Arnia sub sector late on Sunday. Skirmishes went on till midnight.
