Smileys will replace marks in the report cards of Class I and 2 kids in government schools of Madhya Pradesh from the next academic session to make learning more interesting. BHOPAL: Smileys will replace marks in the report cards of Class I and II students in government schools of Madhya Pradesh from the next academic session to make learning more interesting and less stressful.

The Rajya Siksha Kendra, the state education department’s wing that looks after primary and middle school education, announced the decision on Tuesday. Directives have been issued to all district education officers and district coordinators of Rajya Shiksh Kendra.

Rajya Shiksha Kendra director Lokesh Jatav said, “Nowadays parents start pressuring their kids for good marks from class 1 so we have decided that the evaluation of marks of class I and II students will be done on the basis of exercise books and oral test and no marks would be given.”

Jatav further said that oral test will check achievement of children. Students who have grasped the subject well will be given three smileys in their report card. If the student is still in the learning stage, two smileys will be given and if student needs more effort, one smiley will be marked on his or her progress card.

Achievements in social and personal traits will also be marked in the progress card of class I and II students through smilieys. All districts have been directed that result of annual evaluation from class I to VIII should be declared by April 30.

Marks are absolute figures and often cause stress to parents who compare the marks their kid got with that of others. The smileys are less stressful as many students will get the same number of smilyes. At the same time students who get only one smilyes will be being told in a gentle way that they need to improve,” Jatav said.

Recommendation for evaluation of students made in national curriculum framework says that the process of learning-teaching should be in a fear-free environment. Provision for comprehensive and continuous evaluation has been made in the Right to Education Act -2009.
