LUCKNOW: Around 90,000 children in past five years in the state were born under medical care outside hospitals as ambulance could not be called on time, indicating poor awareness level among the masses.

Data from GVK EMRI that runs the 102 and 108 ambulance service in Uttar Pradesh stated 89,965 deliveries took place with the help of ambulance staff at the women’s house or in the ambulance on way to hospital.

The maximum 3,216 such deliveries took place in Hardoi district between 2012 and 2017 and minimum 342 in Mau district.

“Post-delivery, the women and newborns were admitted to hospital via ambulance,” said Ajay Yadav, spokesperson of GVK EMRI.

Prof Vinod Jain, senior faculty with King George’s Medical University said assessment of the stage of pregnancy and labour pain is crucial and if the assessment is delayed delivery takes place before reaching hospital.

In such cases, he said, family fails to assess the stage of labour.

By the time call is made and ambulance can reach, it’s late for the women to travel and hence the trained staff in the ambulance gets delivery done on the spot.

In over half of the cases, delivery took place in ambulance on way to hospital.

Districts where maximum such deliveries took place are Hardoi (3,216), Bareilly (2,760), Agra (2,401), Bahraich (2,282), Fatehpur (2,247), Kheri (2,246), Sitapur (2,166), Shahjahanpur (2,107), Balrampur (2,073) and Badaun (2,003).

The districts where least such deliveries took place are Sant Kabira Nagar (669), Deoria (654), Ambedkar Nagar (634), Shamli (590), Gaziabad (585), Sant Ravidas Nagar (584), Hapur (444), Lucknow (379), Mahoba (346) and Mau (342).
