Cops gun down suspect who allegedly killed woman, son

MUZAFFARNA­GAR: A suspected criminal, who had allegedly killed an elderly woman and her son in Meerut on January 24, was gunned down in an encounter with the police in the Rohana area in Muzaffarna­gar on Tuesday, police said. A constable and a sub-inspector were injured in the encounter, police said. The alleged criminal was identified as Vikas Jaat of Khanjapur village of Shamli district.

MUZAFFARNA­GAR: A suspected criminal, who had allegedly killed an elderly woman and her son in Meerut on January 24, was gunned down in an encounter with the police in the Rohana area under the kotwali police station in Muzaffarna­gar on Tuesday, police said. A constable and a sub-inspector were injured in the encounter, police said.

Muzaffarna­gar senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Anant Dev Tiwari said the alleged criminal was identified as Vikas Jaat of Khanjapur village in the neighbouri­ng Shamli district. There was a reward of Rs 50,000 on him, he said.

The SSP said Vikas had killed Nichhetra Kaur and her son Balvinder on January 24 at Saurkha village in Meerut district. The police recovered two pistols and a Pulsar bike from the Muzaffarna­gar encounter site, the SSP said.

were eyewitness­es to the murder of the woman’s husband Narendra in October 2016, additional superinten­dent of police Akhilesh Bhadauriya had said after the double murder last month.

The killing of Kaur was captured on CCTV cameras installed at her home and the footage was widely circulated on the social media.

Vikas was among three people who killed the mother-son duo, police have said. While one suspect, Sonu, was arrested soon after the crime, the main accused Maange had surrendere­d before the inter-state cell of the Delhi crime branch on February 3.

Police said Vikas and his accomplice jumped a police barrier during a routine vehicle check on Jauli Road by Manoj Chaudhary, station officer of Sikhera police station, on Tuesday.

The suspects sped off towards the Rampur trijunctio­n, the police said.

The SO informed the district police control room and started chasing them, the police said. The police intercepte­d the duo at Rampur trijunctio­n and the suspects opened fire, the police.

When the police returned fire, Vikas sustained a gunshot injury and his aide escaped, the police said.

Vikas was taken to the district hospital where doctors declared him dead, police said, adding the injured policemen Amit and Vinay Sharma were receiving treatment in hospital.
