LUCKNOW: Traffic constable Ajeet Singh’s phone buzzed when he was on duty at the busy Pachkhaura police station of Ferozabad on Tuesday evening.

He took the call amid the cacophony of vehicles – only to get a pleasant surprise. “Main DGP bol raha hoon (This is the DGP speaking),” the caller told Ajeet. The constable had recently found Rs 5,000 along with a bagful of clothes and marriage invitation cards lying by the roadside during night patrol near Devkheda village. And he had returned these things to the owner.

DGP OP Singh had called him to congratulate him for his honesty; part of a larger plan to connect with lower rung of the police and to boost the morale of the constabulary. The constable had traced the bag’s owner Veerpal Singh through mobile numbers mentioned on the invitation card and went to his house to return it.

It will help the top leadership connect with the grassroots as well as help in improving the image of the khaki clad.

Veerpal was very happy after getting his belongings back as his sister’s marriage was scheduled only a few days later.

This extra effort by the constable even impressed the DGP who could not stop making the call to him. Moreover, the DGP also called up a few other cops after coming to know about their work – that is presenting humane face of the state police force.

The DGP said the entire exercise was to recognise the role and contribution of lower rung cops doing a wonderful job in their own way. He said he believed that the top police leadership should appreciate the lower rung personnel’s work by making calls and rewarding them.

“It will help the top leadership connect with the grassroots as well as help in improving the image of the khaki clad,” emphasized the DGP.

Similarly, the DGP made surprise calls to five policemen in Mahoba who gave away the cash reward of ₹10,100 (which they received for nabbing a rape accused) to the family of a sixyear-old rape victim for the construction of toilet. The cops also assured the girl’s father of providing more money for the construction of toilet, if required.

The girl was raped in December when she had gone about 50 metres away from her house to relieve herself in the open around 3 am. A Varanasi police S-I Surya Prakash Mishra also got a call from the DGP applauding his effort in tracing the lost purse of a Spanish woman Joseph Fernandez, who was on a visit to India on February 5. The S-I traced the purse in a few hours by scanning footages of CCTV cameras and returned it to the woman.
