LUCKNOW/KANPUR: A Class 10 boy in the state capital and a class 12 girl in Etawah committed suicide allegedly due to UP Board exam stress, claimed police.

Himanshu Patel, 19, who had skipped the ongoing board examination, was found hanging from the ceiling of an abandoned room of a bungalow in Naka area of Lucknow on Saturday. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

The student had disappeared five days back when the board exams began on Tuesday.

His body was spotted when locals alerted police about foul smell emanating from the room.

Seventeen-year-old Tanu was found hanging from the ceiling of her house in Maljani locality of Jaswant Nagar, in Etawah on Saturday, the police said.

She had appeared in her UP Board examination on Friday.

Himanshu had been living in the servant’s quarters of the bungalow along with the family of his maternal uncle Suresh Patel since the death of his parents.

He was a student of Harish Chandra Inter College, Sadar, Lucknow.

His maternal uncle told police that Himanshu was weak in studies and was under acute pressure.

The deceased had not left behind any suicide note but initial probe suggest that he took the extreme step due to examination pressure, said sub-inspector (S-I) Vaibhav Kumar Singh of Naka police station.

Singh said his uncle was pressuring him to appear in the examination but the boy was not willing because of poor preparation.

When he disappeared on Tuesday last the family took it lightly as he had done so in the past too but returned after some days. Police said the badly decomposed body suggested the boy had died on the day of his disappearance. “Initial examination of circumstances suggests it is a case of suicide. A probe is on,” said the SI.

“Tanu’s family members feel she took the extreme step as she could not do well in her Friday exam paper,” Jitendra Srivastava, additional SP, Etawah said. “The girl’s family said she looked tense when she came back after giving her examination,” the SP said. She did not leave behind any suicide note.

Tanu is the third girl in Kanpur region to have taken her life or attempted suicide. One suicide over exam stress was reported on Thursday from Hamirpur. Another girl from the region attempted suicide for the same reason, but was saved by her family members.
