3 BHU docs booked for ‘negligence’
VARANASI: In what would be dubbed as a bizarre case of medical negligence, Varanasi police have lodged an FIR against three doctors responsible for leaving behind needles (pins) in the stomach of a woman.
While Prof Nisha Rani Agarwal has been booked for leaving five pins in the woman’s stomach during tubectomy operation held at Sir Sundar Lal (SSL) Hospital, Benares Hindu University (BHU) on February 10, 2017, Dr Puneet and Dr SK Khanna have been named for removing only two out of five pins during the operation held especially for the purpose on October 30, 2017, said Sanjiv Mishra, station officer, Lanka police station.
According to FIR, the alleged negligence first came to light when Reena Dwivedi, wife of Vikas Dwivedi of Chandauli, suffered acute pain in October last year. “It is alleged that while two needles were removed during surgery at SSL on October 30, 2017, three are still there in the abdominal wall of his wife due to which she suffers pain,” said the SO.
An FIR under section of under IPC sections 269 (negligent medical act which could be dangerous to life), section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act) has been registered against three doctors.
When contacted, Dr Puneet said he had no idea about any such patient. Dr SK Khanna, who is out of country, said he would comment only after coming back to India.
Prof Agarwal said, “All allegations are false. He has concocted a story. The patient was treated properly to cure her disease when she was admitted to the hospital.” According to FIR, seven months after her tubectomy operation, the patient complained of stomachache again.
She consulted a local doctor who provided her some medicines and the pain subsided.
However, between May and last week of October, pain reoccurred on several occasions and subsided after she took medicine. In October, she was rushed to SSL again where another surgery to remove “a knot in her abdomen” was performed.

Prof SK Khanna and Dr Puneet, operated upon but managed to remove only two pins.
When another X-ray revealed that three needles (pins) were still stuck in the abdomen, doctors advised another surgery and fixed January 29, 2018 as the date. However, the pins could not be removed even after third surgery.
When the patient contacted the doctor again on Saturday (February 10), surgeons allegedly told her that another surgery was needed.
This infuriated the patient and her kin who lodged an FIR.
Professor Dr SK Tiwari of the department of surgery, BHU, says all allegations are baseless.
He said, “Tubectomy surgery is done below naval point, while the needles were stuck in upper wall of the abdomen. The surgeons removed two needles, which were stuck in upper wall of abdomen and another major surgery is required for removing the remaining pins.”
Chief medical superintendent of SSL Dr OP Upadhyay said, “I have received information about the incident. So far, no one has filed any complaint in this connection. If kin of the patients file complaint, action would be ensured as per rules.”
