VARANASI: A group of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) students created a ruckus in front of a temple on the varsity premises over being denied ‘immediate’ entry into the temple on Tuesday. When BHU chief proctor Prof Royana Singh arrived there on getting information of the ruckus, she was allegedly attacked with stones by the students, police said.

Royana Singh alleged that the students also tried to strangle her and snatched away her mobile phone and chain. She later filed a police complaint in this connection. A police official said an FIR would be registered after an inquiry. Lanka police station officer Sanjiv Mishra confirmed receipt of a complaint.

Royana Singh said that a group of two dozen students accompanying student Abhishek Yadav, who was injured in a road accident some time back, wanted to offer prayers at the new Vishwanath temple ‘immediately’. They even removed the barricades put up near the temple in view of Mahashivratri on Tuesday.

As there was a huge crowd of devotees at the temple, the security men allowed only two students and Abhishek entry to the temple from the VIP gate.

The chief proctor said that all the students demanded ‘immediate’ entry and on being denied they staged a dharna in front of the temple. She said that on getting information she reached the temple and asked the students to end their dharna.

“However, the student got more incensed and attacked me and even snatched away my mobile phone and chain. They also tried to strangle,” she alleged.Later some of the students alleged that Singh misbehaved with them when they protested against denial of entry through the VIP gate. Singh rejected their allegations.
