United opposition demand a debate on Dalit student’s killing
LUCKNOW: A demand for a debate on killing of a Dalit student in Allahabad and action against those involved in the murder brought members of the main opposition parties together in the assembly on Tuesday.
Members of the Samajwadi Party, the BSP and Congress entered the well of the state assembly saying “atrocities against Dalits are rising” and forced its adjournment for the day.
Calling the government antiDalit and raising slogan “Daliton ke hatyaro ko fansi do” (hang those involved in murder of Dalits), the members also demanded action against the policemen who, they said, were lax in acting and registering a case after the incident.
Leader of opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary quoted incidents of crime against Dalits in Saharanpur to make his point that atrocities against Dalits were on rise.
Minister for parliamentary affairs Suresh Khanna gave a detailed account of the incident to make his point that the killing may have taken place because of personal dispute which should not be given colour of crime against Dalits.
Khanna said action would be taken against the policemen if they were found lax in their response.
He said three police teams had been constituted and raids were being conducted to arrest one of the accused Vijay Shankar Singh. He said an accused Munna Singh Chauhan, waiter of Kalka hotel and cook of Vijay Singh have been arrested. Speaker Hridaya Narain Dixit rejected the adjournment motion.
Soon the opposition members entered well of the house and began shouting slogans. As members refused to take their seats, the speaker took up the listed agenda and adjourned the house for the day.
