KANPUR: In a fresh initiative to keep Ganga water clean, the state government has sought the assistance of scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K).

“The IIT-K scientists will be included in the monitoring team for assessing the pollution in the river water,” said Kuldeep Misra, regional pollution control officer, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB).

He said the decision to this effect was taken at a high level meeting of the UPPCB and CPCB officials held at Lucknow last week.

“It was decided here that the UPPCB and CPCB scientists would collect the sample of river water and send it to the chemical laboratory of the IIT-K for the examination of the pollutants in the river water. Besides, the IIT-K scientists could also collect their own samples for testing,” said Misra.

The IIT-K scientists will be included in the team to monitor pollutants as IIT-K has highly sophisticated machines which can detect even the minutest pollutants, said HC Joshi, senior scientist, UPPCB.

He said a detailed and the minutest analysis of the river water would help to draw a definite pollution control strategy for containing the discharge of pollutants in the river and ensure pollution free river water.

At present, the UPPCB has about 15 monitoring centres on the up and the down-stream of Ganga in Kanpur, Kannauj and Farrukhabad, which collects the water samples for regular testing.
