Lawyers of 22 west UP districts go on strike
MEERUT: Lawyers of 22 districts of western UP went on strike on Saturday to push their demand for a high court bench in the region.
A meeting was convened in Meerut on the day and it was decided that they would remain on strike till February 26.
The move comes as a reaction to the Centre’s recent approval of a third high court bench in Maharashtra.
Lawyers of western Uttar Pradesh, who have been demanding a high court bench for over four decades, have now decided to launch a fresh round of agitation to assert their demand.
Sanjay Sharma, secretary of the High Court Bench Sangharsh Samiti, said, “The Samiti has decided that lawyers of 22 districts will remain on strike till February 26. They will not allow the registry and treasury offices to run during this time. Every district will also convene a relay hunger strike that will last till February 26. On February 22, a ‘Jan Jagran’ rally will be taken out to apprise people about the significance of our demand for a high court bench.”
Representatives of the Samiti from 22 districts gathered in Meerut to discuss the issue and decide on the future course of action. They also decided to hold a press conference at the Press Club of India on February 26, in which they would invite MPs of these districts.
“Our motive is to appeal to these MPs to help bring the issue to the notice of the Prime Minister,” said Sharma, who blamed weak political leadership for keeping the people of the region deprived of “doorstep justice”.
