18yearold girl burnt alive in Unnao

KANPUR: An 18-year-old girl was allegedly burnt alive late Thursday night in Unnao while she was on her way home on a bicycle, her family claimed. ADG Lucknow Rajeev Krishna said police were treating the case as homicide.

KANPUR: An 18-year-old girl was allegedly burnt alive late Thursday night in Unnao while she was on her way home on the bicycle, her family claimed.

ADG Lucknow Rajeev Krishna said police were treating the case as homicide as prima facie it appears the girl had been murdered. “It is a gruesome crime and the perpetrato­rs of the crime will not be spared,” he said.

IG Zone Lucknow Sujeet Pandey also visited the crime spot to monitor investigat­ions.

The girl’s burnt body was found between her house and the vegetable market in Bara Sagwar from where she had bought some vegetables. A plastic container, partially filled with petrol, and matchbox were found close to the body. Her bicycle and the vegetables were lying nearby. SP Unnao Pushpanjal­i (she goes by one name) earlier said it is not clear if she committed suicide or was murdered. The police were investigat­ing the case, she said.

An eye-witness told the police that he saw the girl in flames at around 8 pm but could not do much to save her. Her mother was working in the nearby mustard field at the time of the crime.

The girl had left her house around 7 pm. The place where she died is bit isolated, said the police. The police ate probing the case.
