Attack on student for lodging plaint

-

VARANASI : A BHU student was allegedly attacked on Thursday by a group of unidentified persons on the university campus for filing a complaint against the staging of a play glorifying Nathuram Godse in an annual cultural event ‘Sanskriti’ at faculty of the arts on February 20.

Following the attack, the BHU student Avinash Ojha filed a complaint with police. Station officer Lanka Sanjiv Mishra confirmed that an FIR was registered against three persons in this connection following the complaint by a student. Further investigation into the incident was in progress, he added.

Ojha said he along with a few friends filed a complaint with dean faculty of arts office against the staging of the play. He alleged that he was sipping tea at a stall when suddenly a group of students reached there and attacked him before fleeing the spot.

When contacted, BHU’s public relations officer Dr Rajesh Singh

The drama was highly objectionable. It glorified Godse who assassinated Gandhi. Godse was sentenced to death for assassinating Gandhi. The drama is against our constitutional values and hurts our sentiment. How staging of such a drama can be allowed, VIKAS SINGH, BHU student

said, “I am not aware about the incident. If there has been any such incident, I condemn it. Action would be ensured against those who attacked the student.”

Vikas Singh, a member of the BHU’s Joint Action Committee, flayed the attack on Ojha. He said Ojha was rushed to the trauma centre and was discharged after treatment.

Earlier on Wednesday, a group of BHU students lodged a complaint with police against the staging of the above-mentioned play on Godse. Vikas Singh, Ramayan Patel and Anurag lodged the complaint with the police.

Station officer Lanka police station Sanjiv Mishra confirmed that the complaint had been received.

“A probe is in progress. Action will be taken on the basis of the probe report,” Mishra added.

“The drama was highly objectionable. It glorified Godse who assassinated Gandhi. Godse was sentenced to death for assassinating Gandhi. The drama is against our constitutional values and hurts our sentiment. How staging of such a drama can be allowed,” alleged Vikas Singh.

In the complaint, the students alleged that the solo drama ‘Me Nathuram Godse Boltoya’ (I, Naturam Godse speaking) was staged by a student who delivered controversial dialogues and justified the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Singh claimed that they demanded action against those ‘involved’ in staging the drama. He termed the incident a conspiracy and yet another effort to saffronise the university campus.

“A student staged a solo drama during annual cultural event Sanskriti at faculty of arts. He delivered a few dialogues from the drama. But no one was aware about the drama which he staged in the event. People came to know about it only when he started delivering dialogue,” said BHU’s public relations officer Dr Rajesh Singh.

“In the event, the students stage drama of their choice in solo performance,” Dr Singh added. He further said some elements were blowing the issue out of proportion, claiming that nothing was intentional.
