LAKHIMPUR KHERI: A minor girl committed suicide after an altercation with her younger sister over sharing a loaf of bread on Thursday.

The 15-year-old girl hanged herself in her hut in Nai Basti locality, Nighasan about 56 kms from Lakhimpur. She was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition but she succumbed to her injuries on Friday.

The girl’s mother had gone to a local shop when the incident took place while her father had died four years ago.

The girl was at home with her younger sister Mohini, 9, and brother Mohit, 7.

Meanwhile, a section of the

media reported it as starvation death. However, sub divisional magistrate (SDM) Nighasan, Akhilesh Yadav, who visited the family and investigated the matter on Friday, categorically ruled out starvation as the reason behind the girl’s suicide.

Talking to Hindustan Times, the SDM said, “The girl’s mother had procured ration on her Antyodaya ration card on February

5, which ruled out scarcity of food. The mother has admitted to having received foodgrain for this month.”

He further said, “The mother had also been granted widow pension and on January 23 she had withdrawn money. Some money is still deposited in her bank account.”

On Saturday, the SDM submitted an inquiry report to district magistrate Shailendra Kumar Singh ruling out starvation as the motive.

As per reports, the 15-year-old girl, daughter of late Chhotey Lal, had brought a loaf of bread from her neigbour to feed her younger brother.

However, her younger sister insisted on having the bread following which an altercation took place between the siblings. Upset over the issue, the girl took the extreme step. The children’s mother Jagrana had gone to a local shop at the time of the incident.

The family originally hailed from Mahadev Mudiya village. A few years back after flood from river Sharda destroyed their land and property, the family migrated to Nighasan.
