‘WOMAN ATHLETE POURED ACID ON SELF, FRIEND TO SAVE BOYFRIEND’

MEERUT The incident of acid attack on two athletes in Lalkurti area of Meerut on Wednesday took an interesting turn on Saturday when the cops probing the attack said wrestler Shalu poured acid on herself and her friend Garima, a boxer, to implicate Soni, complainant in a gang rape case in which Shalu’s boyfriend was an accused. SSP Manjul Saini confirmed the development. The alleged gangrape incident took place in a hotel on Garh road five months ago.

Soon after the incident, police had arrested Soni and her brother-in-law Vijay besides one other.

Superintendent of police (crime) Shivram Yadav said the investigating team found that Shalu hatched the plot to exert pressure on Soni to withdraw the gangrape charges against accused Sanjeev Khari.

The alleged gangrape incident took place in a hotel on Garh road five months ago.

“Police are trying to protect themselves. I don’t know why and under whose pressure. I have the satisfaction that my daughter is safe though she sustained injuries,” said Shalu’s mother Kamlesh when asked for her comment on the developments on Saturday.

Shalu and Garima are undergoing treatment in a hospital. The SP crime said the details of the probe would be briefed to the court and cases would be lodged against both the athletes.
