Couple remarry for benefits in Kannauj, too

KANPUR: In a case similar to that of Noida, three couples remarried in Kannauj under the Mukhmantri Samoohik Vivak Yojna to avail the benefits given under the scheme.

They were registered from Tirva and were married at a function held on February 28.

District magistrate, Kannauj, Ravindra Kumar ordered action against two village developmen­t officers and the couples.

SP Kannauj Harish Chandra said the FIR was registered with the Tirva police. “The police are investigat­ing the case; arrests will be made after competitio­n of the inquiry,” he said.

Jyoti Prabha and Rinki Devi of Baddhapurw­a and Madhuri Devi of Kaliyanpur­wa, in Phulwari, were already married but renewed their vows with their respective husbands, said the FIR.

Pal, also named in the FIR, registered the women despite they knowing about their marriage.

“Total nine persons have been named in the FIR. They include the husbands of women,” said the SP.

The government gives each registered woman Rs 35,000 out of which 20,000 is deposited in the bank account, 5000 is spent on clothes, 5000 on marriage expenditur­e and rest is paid to buy silver anklets and toe rings.

In Auraiya recently, the district social welfare officer had lodged an FIR after the anklets and toe rings given to 48 women were found of metal.
