GORAKHPUR: A so-called voter slip showing Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli as an eligible voter for the Gorakhpur bypoll scheduled on March 11 has surfaced on the social media and the district election authorities have ordered a probe into the matter, an official said.

Gorakhpur district magistrate Rajeev Rautela, who is also the district election officer, directed the subdivisional magistrate (Sahjanwa) Pankaj Srivastav and the tehsildar to probe the matter, said deputy election officer Prabhunath.

The so-called voter slip shows Kohli to be a voter in the Sahjanwa assembly segment of Gorakhpur Lok Sabha constituency.

Prabhunath said: “The issue is very serious. The SDM, Sahjanwa, has been asked to look into the matter and submit a report in two days. Appropriate action will be taken against those found guilty.”

An official said the DM had brought the matter to the notice of the Election Commission.

People familiar with the matter said booth level officer Sunita Chaubey was given a bundle of voter slips for distribution on Thursday. She was shocked to see one such voter slip carrying Virat Kohli’s photo and his name.

She went through the voter list, trying to find any elector with the same name as Virat Kohli but found none.

She then handed the slip over to the local corporator who brought it to the notice of the DM, people familiar with the matter said.

The slips shows Virat Kohli as a voter of Sahjanwa assembly constituency. His voter number is mentioned as 822. The electoral list carrying his photo shows his ID as RSV 2231801.

The polling booth mentioned in his slip is Luchui primary school, Sahjanwa .
