KGMU officials appeal for A+ blood donations

LUCKNOW: Officials of the King George’s Medical University’s blood bank have appealed to people with A-positive (A+) blood group to donate blood to meet the stock crisis.

In a circular, Prof Tulika Chandra, head of the transfusion medicine department, has asked all the faculty, staff and resident doctors of KGMU with A+ blood group to donate in a special camp on March 13. Other people can come and donate anytime.

“Lack of A+ blood group was there since past two months. But now, the crisis has arisen as out of the 2,000 blood units we have, only 30 are of A+,” she said.

The department issues packed red blood cells (PRBCs) -- a component of blood. She said that the crisis came up also because several categories of patients have to be given blood even without donors and donation of this blood group people remained less in the

past two months. “We thought camps would suffice the crisis but it did not happen, so we decided to go for group specific blood donation camp,” she said.

The department has already circulated the message among the faculty member and resident doctors of the KGMU. “We are taking steps to spread the message. The aim is to push the stock level high for once so that the crisis is over and no patient is denied blood,” she said.
