GORAKHPUR: A five-member committee led by BJP zonal president Dr Mahendra Singh will review reasons behind the party’s humiliating defeat in the bypoll for Gorakhpur seat and send a report to chief minister Yogi Adityanath for further action.

The review committee will comprise BJP district president Janrnadan Tiwari, general secretary Rahul Srivastav and five MLAs including Dr Radha Mohan Das Aggarwal, Fateh Bahadur Singh, Vipin Singh, Mahendra Pal Singh and Sheetal Pandey.

“Victory and defeat are a part of democracy. We will be reviewing the reason behind the defeat to ensure better performance in 2019 Lok Sabha polls and 2022 assembly elections,” said Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regional spokesperson Satendra Sinha while admitting that overconfidence among party workers was one of the major reasons for the defeat in Yogi’s bastion.

Meanwhile, the BJP office at Beniganj, which would remain abuzz with workers during the bypoll, wore a deserted look on Friday. Party insiders said a large number of BJP voters could not cast their vote due to anomalies in the electoral list of Gorakhpur Vidhan Sabha, which accounts for a large number of upper caste voters.

“Our party workers will look into the reasons of defeat by visiting every booth. It has come to our notice that at many booths the name of BJP supporters were missing from electoral list, while many others whose name were included in list could not vote as the voter slip was not delivered to them,” said a party worker .

Besides, the review report will also contain information about district and zone level officials whose bad style of working also affected the voters, said an insider.

In addition, feedback about officials who did not take interest in resolving problems of locals will also be shared.

As per a temple official, a large number of complaints come daily to the office of Chief Minister Yogi at Gorakhnath temple but most of them remained unresolved.
