AGRA : An allegedly drunk man strangled his five-year-old daughter, placed her in a sack and then set her ablaze at Harsena village in Kasganj district on Monday, police said.

Sheesh Pal Singh, the senior sub-inspector at Dholna police station in Kasganj district, said: “The accused father Mahipal Singh, 45, has been arrested. He is a habitual drunkard. The girl’s body has been sent for post-mortem. Prima facie, it appears the accused lost his senses because of excessive liquor and burnt his daughter (sic).”

Police said Mahipal started consuming liquor and beat his daughter Somwati for no reason soon after he returned from the brick-kiln where he worked.

He strangled the girl before other villagers could rescue the girl, police said. He then tied the girl in a sack and burnt her, police said. Police said it was not clear if the girl was dead when she was tied up in the sack.

“The body of the girl was found badly burnt. A burnt sack, too, was found at the spot. Sumitra, the child’s mother, had gone to gather fodder for cattle at the time of the incident,” said the senior sub-inspector. The girl was among the three daughters and two sons of Mahipal Singh, police said.
