‘Gender equality is about ensuring equal rights for men and women’
LUCKNOW: Gender equality isn’t about allowing extra rights and powers for women. Rather, it is for ensuring equal rights for both men and women.
These thoughts were shared by Prof Roop Rekha Verma, social worker and former vice chancellor of Lucknow-University at an award function organised by the Lucknow Management Association (LMA) at Jaipuria Institute of Management here on Monday.
On the occasion, Prof Verma, an eminent academician who taught philosophy at LU for 39 years and performed social service through her organisation ‘Saajhi Duniya’, was felicitated with the ‘LMA lifetime achievement award’. Several other women were felicitated with the ‘LMA outstanding woman achievers award’ for their contributions in the fields of academics, sports, culture, corporate, entrepreneurship and social service.
These included Meenakshi Pawaha, associate professor, department of English LU. Pawaha has also authored two books and written several papers that were published in national and international journals.
Sunita Jhingran, descendant of music exponent Swami Haridas and disciple of Begum Akhtar, was honoured for her contributions in the field of culture. Her repertoire includes classical and semi classical music, thumri, dadra and sufiyana style.
Sapna Upadhyaya, who has been working for the benefit of poor and deprived mothers of children suffering from cancer, was also felicitated on the occasion. She was awarded the ‘LMA outstanding award for social service’. Rachna Govil, executive director Sports Authority of India, was conferred with the L MA award for her contributions in sports. Satya Singh, retired inspector of UP police now engaged in social work, was felicitated in the governance category.
Surekha Waldia was felicitated in the entrepreneurship category and Tripti Singh, executive director Drishtikon consultant who provides consulting in human resources, organisation development, leadership development and executive coaching, was honoured in the corporate category. Two men were also awarded on the occasion -- Sachin Sahni, who was honoured for his business start-up, and Vishwajeet Kumar of Community Empowerment Lab that works to improve maternal and newborn health.
