Mexican caught with Sat phone at Kashi airport

VARANASI : A Mexican national was allegedly caught with a satellite phone at the Lal Bahadur Shastri internatio­nal airport in Varanasi on Wednesday, a senior Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) official said. The CISF looks after security at airports across the country.

Subrat Jha, CISF deputy commandant, said the Mexican national and his family members reached the airport at 11.30am to board Air India flight 406 for Agra.

During security check, the x-ray machine detected a suspicious object in Mexican national’s bag, the CISF official said.

Jha said the security personnel examined the bag and found a satellite phone in it. The foreigner was immediatel­y intercepte­d and his boarding pass was cancelled, he said. Police, intelligen­ce agencies were informed about the developmen­t, he said, adding the Mexican national’s family members were allowed to go.

Jha said the Mexican national was handed over to police.

Police said the Mexican national, identified as Eugenio Ramirez Llano, told the agencies that he carried the satellite phone for his convenienc­e and he had no other intention.
