GORAKHPUR : A former Dalit student leader suffered severe head injuries when he was attacked with a pistol butt allegedly by some rival group miscreants who also created panic among inmates of Vivekanand hostel of DDU Gorakhpur University by firing three rounds on Thursday noon. The miscreants also took selfies with the badly injured victim and hurled abuses before escaping on bikes, said hostel inmates.

Victim Amar Paswan, 30, was rushed to the district hospital from where he was referred to BRD Medical College in a critical condition. An FIR was lodged by Paswan’s wife Annu against unidentified miscreants at Cantonment police station.

University proctor Professor Gopal Prasad said the attackers were outsiders and Amar Paswan was not a university student. Meanwhile, police, who reached the site after the miscreants had fled, denied any firing in the hostel even though they recovered three empty cartridges. Police also said that Paswan had been hit with a blunt object and not a pistol butt.

“One Amar Paswan, who is not enrolled in any university course, has been attacked by someone with a blunt object. We are examining the CCTV footage to identify the attackers. Eyewitness told us that no firing has taken place but we recovered three empty cartridges. Amar Paswan has a long criminal history and we have invoked Gangster Act against him,” SP city Vinay Singh said.
