NEWDELHI:A Delhi court on Tuesday ordered the attachment of properties of fugitive tycoon Vijay Mallya in a Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) violation case.

Chief metropolitan magistrate Deepak Sherawat directed the attachment under section 83 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which provides for attachment of property of an absconding person.

The court directed the attachment through the Bengaluru police commissioner, and sought a status-report by May 8.

Earlier this year, the court had declared Mallya a proclaimed offender for not responding to summons in the FERA case.

The court in November 2017 had given Mallya one last opportunity to appear before it by December 18, 2017.

Four summons were served to Mallya in connection with a contract signed in December 1995 with London-based Benetton Formula Ltd to promote the Kingfisher brand abroad.

It was alleged that a payment of $200,000 was made to the British firm for displaying Kingfisher logo in Formula One World Championships in London and some European countries in 1996, 1997 and 1998.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed that the money was allegedly paid without prior approval from the Reserve Bank of India, in violation of FERA.
