-

LUCKNOW :The Lucknow Municipal Corporation, following the recommendations of National Green Tribunal to promote environment friendly cremation, has decided to set up an electric crematorium at Gulalaghat Shamshanghat.

A proposal regarding this would be placed in the meeting of LMC house on Thursday. According to mayor Sanyukta Bhatia, “With growing awareness about environment, more people have started choosing electric cremation over the traditional one. Electric cremation means saving valuable resources like trees and water and saving the environment. Progressive people who want to cremate the bodies in a more eco-friendly way, electric cremation or green cremation system should be promoted.” She said, “The concept of electric cremation is there since January 1989 when Ganga Action plan was made. The idea is to serve the purpose of eco-friendly cremation.”

Ramesh Kapoor Baba, corporator of Chowk said, “In order to tackle environmental pollution, it’s a welcome step.”

Environmentalist VK Joshi says, “The traditional funeral pyre requires around 300 kg of firewood. The total cost is around Rs 2,000 – 3,000 and the mortal remains can be taken only after 24 hours while electric cremation is comparatively less expensive. The mortal remains could be collected within a few hours of cremation. In electric cremation, there are no gas emissions. The process is hygienic, environment friendly and cost effective.”
