WHAT THE GOVT CAN DO

-

▪ If government alone cannot handle and follow up cases for long, it should seek help from NGOs

▪ Include network of survivors to counsell victims

▪ Regular capacity building for officials

▪ Provisions for welfare homes that can accommodat­e survivors of rape and other sexual offences

▪ Strengthen support system for survivors to enable them safety and after care

WHAT POLICE CAN DO?

▪ Regular follow-ups

▪ Deployment of young and energetic officials to look into cases of sexual abuse

▪ Avoid quick transfers of such officials as it also hampers the working and delays the investigat­ion

▪ Record victim’s statement within three days and lodge FIR immediatel­y

WHAT COURTS CAN DO?

▪ Travel or day allowance to victims every time they visit the court for hearing. This is because many have to compromise on their daily wages to attend court hearings. Shubhangi said, “In law, there is a provision to give allowance to the victim on every court visit. Other states have taken a lead in giving allowance to the victims where they are given the allowance on site.”

▪ Speedy trials in cases of child sexual abuse. Experts say it should be done within 3 months

▪ Ensure in camera hearings

▪ Videograph statement recordings

▪ Time bound conviction

WHAT CIVIL SOCIETY CAN DO?

Boycott the culprits of sexual abuse . In villages, it can be done through gram pradhans. A list of sexual offenders can be made and publicised Accept survivors as normal citizens and not treat them as culprits

WHAT GIRLS CAN DO?

▪ Be alert all the time, says Prof Nishi Pandey. Through alertness, a lot of crimes can be averted.

▪ Never wait for the second chance and raise voice against any crime , the very first time

▪ Don’t feel ashamed of any sexual offence. You never did anything wrong

▪ Move with pepper sprays and apply other self defence tricks when needed
