LUCKNOW :Infertility was a social problem so far as Indian women were concerned, said Prof Osama Shawki, a medical educator who is also popularly known as ‘king of hysteroscopy’.

While talking to media at Ajanta Hospital and IVF Centre on Sunday, where he came for a two-day workshop, he spoke on the medical advances for infertility.

“Uterus is a sacred place in the body which was seen earlier by only the embryo, but with advances in hysteroscopy we can help couples to have babies even if there are obstructions in the organ,” he said.

Dr Geeta Khanna, the organising secretary of the event said that hysteroscopy offers the advantage of direct visualization of the uterine cavity while giving option of collective biopsy. It can be done in the OPD timings to diagnose cause of unexplained infertility, unexplained normal uterine bleeding and recurrent miscarriages.

Hysteroscopy is the best way to visualize uterine cavity and treat problem of uterus.

“In fact IVF that has high success rate should also be supported with hysteroscopy if done in advance, wherever required. This can actually increase the success rate of IVF,” said Dr Geeta Khanna.

The experts said that hysterectomy – a surgical procedure to remove a woman’s uterus – can also be avoided in large number of cases with the help of hysteroscopy as many times the doctor does not find ways to remove the cause of trouble in the uterus which hysteroscopy provides.
