Woman injured in acid attack by estranged hubby

BAREILLY: A 25-year-old woman was seriously injured in an acid attack allegedly by her estranged husband and in-laws in the Kotwali area of Moradabad on Monday.

The police registered an FIR against the victim’s estranged husband and his parents.

The victim was rushed to the district hospital, where she has been kept in the intensive care unit.

According to hospital sources, the woman received second and third degree burns on her neck, chest and hands in the attack.

“The incident occurred in the Parker Road market when the woman was returning home from the Police Family Counsellin­g Cell after a counsellin­g session,” said Ashish Srivastav, SP (city), Moradabad.

According to the complaint lodged by the woman’s kin, the acid was thrown by the victim’s husband, Rajan Pathak.

“Rajan Pathak was sitting on a bike being ridden by his father. He was carrying a plastic bottle containing acid, which he threw on the woman,” reads the complaint.

Based on the compliant, the Kotwali police registered an FIR under Section 326 A (acid attack) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Rajan Pathak and his parents.

The woman’s family also accused Rajan Pathak of harassment and domestic violence.

As per the complaint, Rajan of Bareilly district was married to the woman in 2016 but their relationsh­ip ended in a few months and the woman returned to her family in Moradabad.

“The woman and Rajan had a counsellin­g appointmen­t on Monday. The attack occurred when the woman was returning home from the counsellin­g,” added the SP. The investigat­ors sent a team to Bareilly to detain Rajan and his family members and were scanning footages of the CCTV cameras in the area where the incident took place.
