LUCKNOW A notorious criminal known as ‘thumb chewer’ among cops was arrested from Madiaon area on Wednesday after remaining on the run for over five months. Gangster act had been imposed on him and he carried a reward of ₹25,000 on his head.

“The accused, Humayun Miyan, had multiple cases of attempt to murder, extortion, and had a long criminal history since 2011. His name had also surfaced in sectarian clash reported in the Old city around three years ago,” said a sub-inspector (S-I) Udai Pratap Singh of crime branch and member of a police team instrumental in arresting him.

Singh said in August 2007, Humayun was arrested and he had chewed off the thumb of police constable Mahendra Kumar to free himself from his custody when he was brought at Satkhanda police outpost of Thakurganj. He was held for allegedly demanding extortion from one Abbas Ali, who runs toy cars for children near the clock tower park in front of Chhota Imambada.

The S-I said the accused had chewed off the constable’s right hand thumb and did not leave him despite the efforts of other cops present at the outpost. He said the constable’s thumb was totally separated from his hand and even the doctors at KGMU’s trauma centre could not join it surgically as the accused had badly chewed off the body part. “Since then the accused was popularly known as thumb chewer,” he added.

Singh said Humayun was then sent to jail but he disappeared after coming out of jail on bail in the case and was wanted in gangster act imposed on him.

He said the city police was searching for him for the past five months and SSP Lucknow Deepak Kumar had announced the reward on his head.

He said the crime branch team was trying to locate him and finally arrested him near Ghaila bridge on IIM road in Madiaon when he had come to meet his family members staying in Hussainabad, Thakurganj.
