LUCKNOW: All those who feel a woman is safe within the confines of her house, had better think again. And for others who feel age is what makes one more vulnerable, this story will break the myths.

The woman was married and had just had her first child. She was at home with her new born baby and her husband had left for work when her brother-inlaw rang the door bell. He was elder to her husband and was an assistant manager in a nationalised bank.

He told her that he had come to a meeting at a nearby place and as he was thirsty, he just wanted a glass of water. The woman, who was alone with the baby, could never imagine he had any ill-intensions.

“He asked for water and I went to get it. He then grabbed me and raped me despite a lot of resistance from my side. I had had a Caesarian only a few days back and did not have much strength to fight him ,” she said.

She shouted and cried but he did not stop. “He raped me and went away. I was shocked. With my baby by my side, I could not understand what to do. I waited for my husband to come back from work and narrated the incident to him. Initially, I feared his reaction. But he extended all possible support,” she recalled.

The husband gave her emotional support as well as the strength to fight back. “He would tell me that I should not be

ashamed. It wasn’t my fault. He would also asssure me that he would get me justice,” she said.

But fighting against a family member was not easy.

Pressure and objections started pouring in from other family members.

“They wanted us to stay silent and to not register a case. Many relatives even tried to tarnish my image. But nothing could make my husband step back,” she says.

The battle began and continued for eight long years. Financially, the couple was not financially strong. But with the support of some social organisations, they continued their battle and finally won. The culprit was sentenced to imprisonment for 10 years and a fine was also imposed on him.

“We fought for eight long years. We lost all relatives during these years. Just two of us fought tooth and nail and finally emerged as winners,” she said.

She celebrated her victory, she said, adding, “My husband has set an example for all that it is very important to support a wife when she is in odd circumstances. His support has been my biggest strength.”
