AGRA: Samajwadi Party (SP) founder Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday backed the decision of his son and party president Akhilesh Yadav to join hands with the BSP for elections, saying such an alliance will be invincible in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

“If the SP and BSP combine, no one will be able to defeat them in forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The coming together of the SP and the BSP will change the national scenario of politics,” he said at a public meeting in rural Mainpuri.

The SP patron also thanked the workers of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) for supporting the SP candidates in the recently held bypolls to Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Yadav appeared pleased with the presence of both Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party flags at the venue of his public meeting at Chanda village, which is part of Mainpuri’s Kisni assembly constituency.

He assured Bahujan Samaj Party leaders present at the meeting that the initiative for an understanding between the two parties would continue.

Mulayam Singh Yadav had entered into an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party in 1993 and the two parties had ruled UP for over 18 months before falling out over the state guesthouse incident in 1995.

The Samajwadi Party founder also targeted the BJP government at the Centre. “The voters had discarded the Congress on issue of inflation and corruption, but the BJP too failed in putting an end to corruption and inflation. The result is that people across the country are reeling under escalating prices and unabated corruption,” he said.

He praised voters in Mainpuri for keeping the Samajwadi Party flag flying.

“Voters from all sections have contributed to my election victories,” said the senior Yadav who had won the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat in 1996, 2004, 2009 and 2014. However, he vacated the seat in 2014, opting to retain Azamgarh.
