Critical surgery postponed due to ‘administrative mismanagement’
LUCKNOW: A minor boy’s surgery scheduled at Balrampur Hospital on Tuesday had to be postponed due to administrative mismanagement. Hospital sources said when the surgeon concerned went to the operation theatre, administrative officials informed him about changes in his surgery days, which meant that the boy’s turn would fall on Thursday. Till afternoon, doctors and administrative officials discussed the issue, but finally the procedure had to be called off.
The child, a resident of Amethi, is suffering with Dandy Walker Syndrome and Hydrocephalus. He was admitted to the hospital on Monday and the doctors decided to operate on him as soon as possible. They listed the his surgery for Tuesday and told his parents that he needed to be on an empty stomach on the day.
Clarifying the hospital’ s stand, director Dr Rajiv Lochan said, “The doctor’s surgery day was changed and he was informed accordingly. There was no reason to list the surgery on that day. Now, the operation has been scheduled for April 12.”
Meanwhile, the child stayed without food and water all through the morning, getting his first drink only at around 1 pm. He will now have to repeat this process on Thursday.
Dandy-Walker Syndrome is a rare congenital human brain malformation. It affects multiple organs, but the fundamental abnormalities involve the cerebellum that controls muscle coordination. Hydrocephalus is a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain. This typically increases the pressure in the skull, often necessitating early surgery.
