LUCKNOW:Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia has called on for greater cooperation between countries for solid waste management in cities. She addressed a gathering of mayors while taking part in regional Asia Pacific 3R forum meeting at Indore on Wednesday and Thursday. Around 100 mayors of various cities around the world participated in the meeting of forum.
The programme was presided over by director and CEO 3R waste foundation Dr Kulwant Singh. For saving the cities from pollution and filth, the ways and means to reduce, reuse and recycle waste were discussed.
Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia said, “3R forum has provided a great platform for various cities to discuss waste handling in cities. By reducing the waste production one can control further pollution. However, if one cannot control production of waste then one must learn to reuse and recycle the waste for the benefit of environment.”
She said there is a need for cities to exchange technologies and experiences in handling the solid waste produced by the cities. “Some cities in Japan have achieved success in managing the solid waste by reusing and recycling it. Such experiences, if shared, have the potential to change the entire waste management of many cities,” she said.
A universal declaration was signed by mayors of over 100 cities for cooperation in handling the solid waste produced by cities.
