NEWDELHI: Accusing the NDA government of “crushing” institutions, including the Supreme Court and high courts, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “will not be able to stand” in Parliament if he is allowed to speak for 15 minutes.

Blaming the BJP for the washout of the budget session, Gandhi said, “Modi is scared of standing and speaking in Parliament.”

Calling its “Save the Constitution” campaign a farce, BJP chief Amit Shah, in a Facebook post, said the Congress was the only party to have trampled over Constitution in independent India.

NEW DELHI: Accusing the NDA government of “crushing” and “suppressing” institutions, including the Supreme Court, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “will not be able to stand” in Parliament if he is allowed to speak for 15 minutes.

In his sharpest attack yet on Modi, Gandhi also charged him with “destroying the country’s image and reputation” in the world in his four years of rule.

Launching the year-long “Save the Constitution” campaign from Delhi’s Talkatora Stadium, Gandhi said the people of India will tell their “Mann ki Baat” to Modi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, referring to the Prime Minister’s popular outreach programme through radio.

“The Congress’ “Save the Constitution” campaign is nothing but a farce that seeks to perpetuate the rule of dynasty over the rule of democracy,” BJP chief Amit Shah said. “Like in the past, we need to protect the Constitution from the Congress,” he wrote Monday in a Facebook post: “Saving the Constitution or Saving Dynasty?” The Congress chief alleged that the BJP and the RSS were “destroying and suppressing” the institutions, including the Supreme Court and high courts, and filling these with the people belonging to their ideology. “For the first time in the history of India, four top Supreme Court judges sought justice from the people of this country. Generally, the people seek justice from the courts and judges,” he said.

However, Gandhi asserted that the Congress won’t allow the BJP and the RSS to derail institutions created by the Constitution.

“The Congress and Babasaheb Ambedkar gave India its Constitution ...and we protected it. The BJP and RSS will not be able to touch the Constitution, we will not let that happen,” he said.

“This country belongs to each and every one of us. It is the duty of the Congress party to protect the Constitution, the institutions and every single one of our citizens,” Gandhi later tweeted.

Describing the Congress’ campaign as “ironical and comical”, Shah said Congress was the only party to trample over the Constitution in independent India.

“Right now, the buzzword for the Congress and their friends is ‘impeachment.’ The judiciary, which is an institution that is trusted by 125 crore Indians, has invited the wrath of Congress and the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty in particular. I will not get into the reasons (which everybody knows) but I will say that this is a part of a larger trend to demonise and weaken every institution that seeks to maintain its individual identity and not kowtow to the Dynasty,” Shah said. The Vice President of India on Monday rejected a Congress-led notice for motion of removal of the Chief Justice of India. The Congress has decided to appeal this decision in court. The BJP chief also accused the Congress of launching a tirade against the Comptroller and Auditor General, dragging the army into political slugfest, training guns at the Election Commission and questioning the sanctity of the election process.
