LUCKNOW: The residents of Indira Nagar and Gomti Nagar may have to face water shortage for about a month and a half, as the irrigation department has cut off water supply to Kathauta lake from Sharda Canal.

This has been necessitated as the canal has to be repaired for the rainy season. Water supply to Kathauta lake will only be possible in June first week.

However, the Jal Sansthan has taken some steps to ward off a water crisis in these areas.

Jal Sansthan GM, SK Varma said, “There will be some rationing of water but we will not allow anything like a water crisis in these areas. We plan to ensure water supply through 11 tubewells. These tubewells may also be used to fill Kathauta lake if required.”

Tankers of Jal Sansthan will also remain available 24x7.

Varma said, “The irrigation department informed the Jal Sansthan about cutting off the water

supply. But it is difficult for anyone to store water for two months, as the lake will not receive water from Sharda Canal till May last week or June first week.”

Another major decision taken by Jal Sansthan is to prune the supply hours in these areas. Now the water supply will be ensured only for 10 hours instead of 16 hours.

Varma said, “The residents will get five hours’ supply in the morning and five hours’ in the evening.”

He said there was no reason to panic as there was enough water stored in the lake.
