VARANASI: Protesting against an objectionable comment on a religion posted on social media by a youth in Sarai Mir town of Azamgarh, enraged locals barged into the police station there and indulged in heavy stone pelting, damaging a police vehicle on Saturday noon, police said.

They were demanding invocation of the national security act (NSA) against the youth, the police added. Sub-divisional magistrate, Nizamabad, Vagish Kumar Shukla sustained injury in his leg during the incident. Circle officer, Nizamabad, Ravi Shankar Singh said the situation in the town was now completely under control.

A heavy police force was deployed in the town to avoid any untoward incident, he added. According to the police, the youth posted an objectionable comment on his facebook account on Friday.

A few people noticed it and later reached the Sarai Mir police station where they raised their objection to the comment and also filed a complaint against the youth. Swinging into the action, the police arrested the youth on Friday itself.

However, locals in large num- bers reached Sarai Mir police station at around 10am on Saturday and started shouting slogan demanding action against the youth under the National Security Act. Police officials present at police station tried to pacify the crowd, saying that the youth had been arrested.

In the meantime, more locals joined the crowd. Then cops informed senior authorities about it.

Subsequently, circle officer Ravi Shankar Prasad and SDM Vagish Kumar Shukla along with a heavy police force reached the police station.

Not paying any heed to the request made by the cops, the angry mob barged into the police station and created ruckus there.

The police used tear gas shells and mild force to disperse the crowd.
