‘Minimally invasive surgery decreases complications’

LUCKNOW:The site of accident was most important in management of bone injuries, said Dr Sandeep Kapoor, speaking on the second day of AOTRAUMA-2018, the three-day conference on bone and joint injuries .

“A person with fractured bone cannot be lifted like someone who only has bruises. The fractured bone has to be lifted with maximum attention so that its (original) position does not change,” said Dr Kapoor, director of Healthcity Hospital and Trauma Centre and organising secretary of the conference.

Dr Sandeep Garg, the co-convener of the conference said that if a bone in the lower limb was fractured, it could be tied with the other to keep it straight and also blood flow could be controlled by pressing if the distance to the hospital is short.

“Fractured heels usually occur after a fall from a height or in a road accident. They are serious injuries with pain and disability, particularly if left untreated,” said Australian foot and ankle surgeon Dr Les Grujic.

In the session on foot and ankle joints he explained how in the past, conventional surgical treatment to fix these injuries used large incisions.

Several other experts also expressed their view on management of badly mutilated foot and ankle in accidents. The conference aims at training and educating participants on innovations in trauma management and developing new techniques in fracture management. Over 300 delegates from all over the world participated in the event.
