LUCKNOW: At a time when two back to back accidents claimed more than two dozen lives in the state, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said on Saturday unsafe driving was a serious problem in the present time and urged people to follow traffic rules to save their and well as others’ lives.

Addressing a function at his official residence here after flagging off the ‘Run for Safety’ organized by the transport department as part of the 29th Road Safety Week here, Yogi regretted that people often messed with the traffic cops when they were stopped for not wearing helmet or seat belt without realizing observance of rules was in their own interest.

He said over-speeding, drink driving and other lapses on the part of the drivers contributed to the highest number of road accidents.

He said his government was committed to effectively check road mishaps and resultant deaths. “The number of vehicles is rapidly increasing on roads and obeying traffic rules can go a long way in reducing the number of road accidents in the state,” he stressed.

He sought cooperation of all sections of the society in making roads safe.

He advised people to desist from driving with earphones on or talking on cellphone while driving and necessarily wear seatbelts and helmets.

He said stunt biking was causing a lot of accidents and stressed the need for a check on the same. He urged parents to ensure that their minor children did not drive a car or a bike.

The government, the chief minister said, was taking many measures to promote road safety and believed the situation would gradually come under control.

“We are removing engineering defects from identified black spots, have introduced chapters on road safety in the curriculum of primary and junior high school classes, have made road audit mandatory and have issued directions for regular eye check-ups of drivers,” he enumerated.

The state has been rocked by two accidents, one in Kushinagar claiming live of 13 children on Thursday and another on Shahjahanpur-Sitapur road on Saturday in which 12 people have been killed.
